Why Faro is the most overlooked city in the Algarve property market

A working city with an airport, a university and a lagoon on its doorstep — priced as though none of that counts.

Faro is emerging as the most overlooked city in the Algarve property market, offering significantly better value than the coastal resorts an hour either side of it.

Why buyers skip it

Most arrive at the airport and drive straight past. Faro reads as somewhere you transit rather than somewhere you stay, and the old town — walled, cobbled and genuinely lovely — is invisible from the road.

What is actually there

  • A university, which underpins year-round rental demand from a non-tourist tenant base
  • The regional hospital and administrative centre
  • The Ria Formosa on the doorstep, with island beaches reached by ferry
  • New-build apartment stock at price points that no longer exist on the resort coast

The investment view

For yield rather than capital growth, Faro currently looks like the strongest arithmetic in the region — with the caveat that it is a city, and buyers looking for a resort experience will not find one here.
