Living in São Brás de Alportel
The cork industry in Portugal was historically very strong, and São Brás de Alportel was one of its centres. Today it is not the worldwide trade it once was, but you can still see hundreds of cork oaks in the hills around the town.
That history left the town with a mix of traditional Algarve quintas, grand merchant houses and, more recently, contemporary additions built for the view.
It is genuinely inland — no beach, but a real Portuguese town with a weekly market, good value property and the coast half an hour away.
